Bookworm goes to Pub Quiz
Yesterday was my official first day in uni. Although its still freshers week and lessons haven't really begun yet it was my first experience in a uni. It was strange, awkward and weird but not as bad as I imagined. Everyone seems so friendly and everyone staying in the halls are doing a creative subject so at least I can talk to some one about art rather than having to explain it to a psychology student who doesn't believe that errors occur in art.
Moving on, after I was finished at uni me and 4 of my flatmate walked to morrisons which is only a 15 min walk from the flat which wasn't bad. We all went in to get like pasta and rice but in fact we came out with more stuff than we could carry. Once I go back to the flat I then was asked by Megan, a friend from the next flat, if I wanted to go to a pub quiz. I said yes and her friends were already outside, me feeling the need to rush left with my vest, denim jacket, ID and £12 to my name. It was 6:30 and I thought we would only be like an hour or two. It was a 28 min walk to the pub according to google maps and once we reached the pub we realised it was a Wetherspoons. We went in, there was 6 of us, and saw no one from the uni. We found a table because we didn't want to look like dicks and ordered some drinks. It wasn't until one of us looked at her phone, that she realised it didn't start till 8:30 even though she told us 7. We all then decided to order food, through the app because we are all antisocial young adults and speaking to real adults is fucking terrifying. Once our food came and more drinks came we got talking and had a real laugh. It was nice because hours before I had never spoken to these people, except Megan, and now I was eating and drinking with them. Strange is all I can say, but good strange. It turned 8:30 and people from the uni were starting to come through the doors. Phew we're not the only ones we thought. The screens came up and the quiz bloke told us it wouldn't start until 9:15 we were like come on! We've been here for ages. We got our sheet, called ourselves, Quiz Team Aguilera. Someone else joined us, I believe his name was Jack although the music was really loud so it was hard to hear. Anyway, the quiz commenced and the first round was TV and Film. We stormed through, me getting the answer for shooting stars Vic and Bob and Game of Thrones. I was extremely pleased with myself. The next rounds were, Music, Famous faces in which we thought little Cher was a bloke. There was also Brain Teasers including catchphrases and the others were great at that. At one point there was a maths one and we all looked blankly at the screens, we haven't done maths for 4 years and we didn't have a bloody clue. We missed it only for Jack to shout 24! It was right believe it or not and we were ecstatic. Sports we were shit at to be honest, Pop quiz, general knowledge and another subject that I can't think of for the life of me. Anyway, in all we came 3rd and won a £10 voucher to spend at Wetherspoons which we gave to Jack as he did most of the work and when I say that I mean he went up and collected the prize because we were too shy to do so. In all it was a great night, like a pub quiz is usually like old people in flat chaps and talking about sport, when in fact it was so different to what I expected. And above all it was a right laugh. However, as soon as I got out of the pub I get smacked by the cold wind air. I was wearing a vest and my tit were instantly freezing off. The walk back you would of thought would of warmed me up but with it being up hill to the halls the wind just got stronger. I wrapped myself into my jacket cursing that I should of kept my jumper on all the way back.
The moral of this story is that although I didn't know these people and I was really anxious about socialising, I'm so glad that I went out and spoke to people that I wouldn't usually speak to. I guess I have the alcohol to thank for that, everyone gets braver after a pint or two. So if your at uni or beginning again and anxious and nervous about meeting new people, don't. Be brave and say hello.
After all it was just another day in the life as the Yorkshire Bookworm,
Till Next Time,
